Ohana Model Choice

 Model Choices for Magazine

Model: Santana Travis

Age: 2 (Two)

Build: Short and Thin

Hair color: Dark Brown/ Black

Eye Color: Dark Brown

Ethnicity: African - American

Location: Cover and Table of Contents page

I chose Santana Travis to be the model of my family magazine because he was an efficient and easily accessible choice that fit the direction in which I wanted to go into with my magazine. Santana and I worked for the entire shooting production week and were able to get as much as we possibly could with the age difference of course. Santana was definitely eager to play and capture those free shots but it was difficult to keep him in certain poses for a certain amount of time. The images I was able to take of Santana are mostly him in action and taken on live photo so that I could slow down the filmed image and capture the best shot of him. (iPhone iOS option)

Model: Destiny Felton
Age: 18 (Eighteen)
Build: Tall and Thin
Hair color: Dark Brown/Black
Eye Color: Dark Brown
Ethnicity: Caribbean and African - American
Location in Magazine : Feature Story Page

Destiny Felton was chosen as my feature story candidate being that I enjoyed her home life. Destiny is a fraternal twin to her brother Danny and the older sister of siblings who are not twins but born on the same day, different year. Destiny would naturally discuss her life as a twin and older sister of basically twins and the challenges and advantages the family took on. I have always found her family interesting and felt it was best to receive more of what that is like. Working with Destiny was awesome, Destiny was comfortable and extremely enthusiastic about working with me which showed in her descriptive answers. Overall, the content of her story is an interesting tale that her and I both believe will raise chins.

Research - Color Scheme

Color Scheme

Color Scheme plays such as vital role in a magazine. It adds on to the illustrations, context, and meaning behind the photographers target. Magazines that capture poses, positions, lightings, props, and other Mise-en-scene elements. Although a magazine cover color scheme will differ from its other pages, fluidity in the scheme can still be found if examined further.

Research - Mis-en-scene

 Mise-en-scence

Every director does lots of planning whether they know it or not, it shows how shots are created before being filmed which is usually always done by the director. Mise-en-scene means where to go on the stage and what to do on the scene. Andre Bazin follows two basic approaches which is mise-en-scene and montage- creating meaning from multiple images. Mise-en-scene is story telling from a single image. Mise-en-scene can include shots that show dynamics at a pace and can state elements such as a persons position, who holds leadership, and who is a target.
There are factors within mise-en-scene that allow it to create it’s own shot these factors include props, set design, costumes, makeup, color, lighting, blocking, framing, lenses, sound, frame rate, and music. With mise-en-scene tradition their is a scale of naturalistic to theatrical which is found in film often. Naturalistic is similar to creating a world we are familiar with while theatrical is meant to tap into uniqueness and strangeness, something that is un-natural.

An example of mise-en-scene factors in this shot can be found in the following:
- The contrasting colors of pastel pink and blue
- Set design is a mail truck or area similar to a post office
- Costumes the blue post office uniforms and the pink blazer sticking with the same color contrast
- Lighting is high - quality but appears to have a shade of color over that lighting so the color isn’t a bright white or yellow but more of a light pastel shade of pink that’ll correspond with the color factor of mise-en-scene
- Framing - a close up shot from a side view to showcase the two characters and their relationship.
**The other elements are found in the movement of images which are typically not found in a magazine.**

Reflection/Interview Questions of Feature Writing Practice 2

Reflection of Feature Draft

Although this was my first time ever completing something like this, I enjoyed every moment of it and received so much information about the depths of busy parents and how the success of your loved ones can affect the rate in which children mature and transform to a more responsible being.

Interview Questions - The following questions were asked by my interviewee during the feature story draft blog.

1.How do you feel about your upbringing?

2.What have you witnessed about others that stirred from their upbringing?

3.Do you believe that the way you were raised impacts how you handle certain situations?

4.Are you judgmental of your parents on how they raise you versus your siblings, if you have them?

5.What have you learned from being a middle child with busy parents?

Words from Interviewee

“ To be completely honest I didn’t really understand what was going on but after reading the feature story I feel more aware and proud of myself, oddly. I felt like my life was never a story to be told but you have written it so well that I can almost see it in a movie or something for teens who feel similar to me. I am glad I was able to experience this and recognize my past emotions for what they were and learn and elevate from them. Thanks for this, I hope teens can learn from this as much as I did.”
